A rare pair of 19th Century Victorian English antique novelty cast iron door stops in the form of the obscure comic cartoon characters Mrs Sloper and Mr Sloper.
Measures: 29cm tall or 11'' approx.
Each weights 2 kg approx.
Made of cast iron with a brass finish. The wooden bases were added at some point .
Condition; some tarnish and wear, the wooden bases show a slightly different colour .Solidly made . See pictures, please.
Alexander “Ally” Sloper is the eponymous fictional character of the comic strip Ally Sloper. He is one of the earliest comic strip characters and he is regarded as the first recurring character in comics.
Red-nosed and blustery, an archetypal lazy schemer often found “sloping” through alleys to avoid his landlord and other creditors, he was created for the British magazine Judy in the 1867 (a humour-magazine rival of the famous Punch).
Beautifully casted ,these truly antique and wonderful Victorian doorstops -bookends would make an amazing addition to your home .
