Mid Century, maybe antique, not sure, Cornish Serpentine Stone Light House Paperweight Ornament, Novelty Paperweight, Nautical Home Decor.
The serpentine stone of the lighthouse has been polished to reveal its true colours via their unique bands and veins and stand on a rocky base. The stone is unique to Cornwall, and in particular the foot of the ‘Lizard’, the most south-westernly point of England. This example was probably made in around 1950's MAYBE EARLIER.
While specimens had been collected for centuries, it was after a visit by Queen Victorian & Albert in 1846 that popularity grew. They ordered a fireplace and vase plinths for Osbourne House, and by the 1851 exhibition a large amount of ornamental stone pieces were on display. The Lighthouses were a favourite souvenirs of the wonderful Cornish coastline.
