In 1920, James Wright Beswick died. The company leadership passed to John Beswick and later to the founder’s grandson John Ewart Beswick. The company expanded in these post-World War I years, introducing bone china in 1934. By employing talented modeler Arthur Gredlington in 1939, Beswick increased their production more detailed figurines designed to appeal to collectors. In 1938, Beswick was incorporated as John Beswick Ltd. John’s sisters, Dorothy Beswick and Gladys Beswick served as directors.

Animal figurines became the most prolific of Beswick’s wares. Decorating manager Jim Hayward focused on creating lifelike effects. The meticulous hand-painting of the figurines created a surge in demand for the collectable wares. This was further reinforced in 1947 by the introduction of the figural line based upon the animal characters in Beatrix Potter’s children’s books. This success was replicated by Disney-inspired line of figurines in 1952.

In 1945, Beswick acquired the former Williamson & Son’s factory. The Thomas Lawrence factory followed in 1957, the same year Beswick became a public company.

The Beswick business was bought by Doulton & Co. in 1969. The factory remained continued to produce animal figurines. The Beatrix potter line was reintroduced in 1998. When the production of Beswick wares ceased in 2002, Doulton sold the factory.
