Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) was an English stage actor of the Victorian era. Known as the actor-manager as he took complete reponsability of everything for season after season at the Lyceum Theatre, establishing himself and his company as representative of English classical theatre. He was the first actor to be awarded a knighthood.
Photogravure is an intaglio printmaking or photo-mechanical process whereby a copper plate is grained to the plate and then coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue which had been exposed to a film positive, and then etched, resulting in a high quality intaglio plate that can reproduce detailed continuous tones of a photograph.
